The right time

Things sometimes do happen at the right time. :o)

After some degree of frustration with recent happenings, augmenting reflections on a difficult year and overall questioning about the meaning of life, my schedule happened to change once again. Entirely calm, I found myself with a few hours to spare and a choice of what to do with my time. Serendipity put "The 7 habits of highly effective people" in my hand - one of two books I could choose from.

Happiness is a choice we make and choose to renew every second - my own motto for the longest time. I left it slip through my fingers for a while, slowly regaining it without even knowing what I'm looking for. Until today.

"People often find themselves achieving victories that are empty, successes that have come at the expense of things they suddenly realize were far more valuable to them. (...) How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important to us, and, keeping that picture in mind, we manage ourselves each day to be and to do what really matters most. If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place, faster" (S.R. Covey, "The seven habits of highly effective people").

Haven't finished the book yet, but the few pages I have read, combined with countless reflections over the past months, start to bring some light over what I was looking for but couldn't quite put my finger on. Choice and belief. Knowing what you want, having the modesty to actually face reality, and then making a conscious choice of going for it.

"Between stimulus and response, man has the power to choose" - I'll grant you that Mr. Covey, thank you for the wake up call. Not every action is a rational one, but most can be. ... when the world looks and seems like it needs some change, the first and most powerful change is inside.

Cheers!
